I Hate _

I hate Joni Mitchell. I wish I didn’t. In many respects, I really like Joni Mitchell. I think she does amazing, gravity-defying things with melody on Blue. I think she’s a fantastic singer, a fine lyricist, an impeccably serious artist. But something about her just sets my teeth on edge. “And we got to get ourselves back to the garden”. Bleh.

I don’t hate Kate Bush. I don’t always like Kate Bush, but I think she goes beyond the self in a way that Joni Mitchell doesn’t. Kate Bush’s music isn’t all about Kate Bush. Sometimes it is really scarily not about Kate Bush, or about not-Kate-Bush. Negation, death drive. “And if I only could, / I’d make a deal with God / and I’d get him to swap our places”. Brrr.

I hate Tool. I think they’re way overrated (and were much better as a slightly proggy grunge band than they are as a slightly grungy prog band - “Undertow” and “Prison Sex” aren’t so bad as such things go). Also Dream Theater. And John Petrucci’s a fucking boring guitarist. Yes, he has chops. But I’d rather listen to Guthrie Govan just arsing around.

But I still like Rush. It’s all right - you don’t have to like them too…
