Nihilism and Monism

Interesting discussion by Jonathan Schaffer.

I’m reminded of an anecdote about T. S. Eliot, as retold by Christopher Ricks. Eliot is on a ferry sailing away from the cliffs of Dover. A fellow passenger enquires as to whether the cliffs are really real. Eliot’s reply: “Oh, they’re real enough”. Ricks notes that the sentence means significantly different things depending on where you place the emphasis, and that part of what Eliot is about is leaving the emphasis unplaced.
