Got XGL and Compiz working on my Dapper desktop. Played around with it for a bit. Showed it off to Sarah, who made a pretty decent attempt at looking like she gave a fuck. Noticed how it slowed everything down. Noticed how annoying the wobbly windows actually were. Turned them off. Noticed how slow everything still was. Tried flipping desktops a couple of times with that cool “cube” effect, got dizzy. Slow, slow, slow. Logged out, switched back to the normal Gnome desktop and made it the default.

Maybe with a better graphics card, a bit more stability (I didn’t mention that I actually had to restart the window decorator a couple of times while doing the above…), and some more tasteful and usability-oriented plug-ins, it’ll be worth coming back to. Right now it’s a cool-looking toy - albeit quite a nice technology demo.
